Social Media Wish List

As a social media power user, I always find myself wishing for certain features that would make my digital social life simpler. I’m not asking for anything complex or out of the ordinary.  Or at least I don’t think I am.  Here are  my top 5 items on my social media wish list. Let me know if any of these sound crazy…

I wish…

1. Facebook would let me edit content after its posted on my timeline. As much as I pride myself on my proof-reading abilities, typos and mistakes find their way in. Rather than delete the entire post, why can’t Facebook just give me an edit feature? We already have it for photo captions (it’s true, click on the permalink of the photo to see the edit button) and comments. In the interest of transparency, all edits would leave a history, just like they do in the comments. It should be relatively simple to implement, hopefully Facebook rolls this feature out with their new newsfeed.

2. Instagram had multiple account support. Being that I manage multiple Instagram accounts, it would be sublime if I could switch between them without having to input my login credentials every time. Twitter and its apps have mastered the art of seamlessly switching between accounts. Surely the talented engineers at Instagram, with the support of Facebook, can come up with a way to do this.

3. Twitter would provide real time search in their native iOs app. It is ridiculous that I cannot search “all tweets” inside Twitter’s own app. Does the Android app have this same issue?  I hope not because its absence is appalling, forcing me to use another Twitter app just to get a real time look at what’s going on. Each time there’s an update for Twitter, I get super excited to see this bug fixed, only to be consistently let down. Come on Twitter, get it together!

4. Tumblr permalinks were easier to find. It is very dependent on the particular Tumblr’s theme. Some of them have clear indicators of where the permalink can be found, while others make it practically invisible. I also wish Tumblr had a better search feature. Its tags are very unreliable. Yes, these are two wishes in one but they were small enough to combine.

5. Basic link tracking and analytics built in to Twitter. Why must we still rely on third party services for link tracking and basic tracking for retweets, favorites and mentions. I am not asking for access to the entire firehose, since it is a key revenue source for Twitter. But for those looking for something simple, I don’t see why they can’t provide an inboard analytics dashboard that gives you the bare minimum. It would be a big boon to small businesses that lack a big marketing budget.

Those are my top 5 at the moment.

What social media features on your wish list? I would love to see them in the comments.
